Jan Olejniczak (Silesian insurgent)


Jan Oleniczak (born in 1879 in Świerczewo near Poznań, died on September 4, 1939 in Katowice) - Polish roadblock, plebiscite activist, Silesian insurrection.

He arrived in Upper Silesia in 1905. In 1908, together with his brother Józef, they bought a drugstore in Katowice at ul. 3 Maja 5. He joined the activities of Polish economic and social organizations. During the plebiscite in Upper Silesia he was a member of the Katowice plebiscite committee. During the riots in 1920, his drugstore was demolished, while after the end of the plebiscite, German militants invaded his apartment (Olejniczak was not at home happily). During the Third Silesian Uprising, he fought as a member of the "South" operational group. During the Second Polish Republic he was active in Polish social organizations. He contributed to the construction of the Home of the Polish Soldier in Katowice, for which he was awarded the badge of the 73rd Infantry Regiment in 1926. He was also the treasurer of the Society for the Protection of the Military Cemetery in Katowice and the secretary of the board of the Association of Polish Republic Roads District IV.

In September 1939 he took part in the defense of Katowice against Germans. He was murdered by them on September 4, 1939. commemoration

In 2008, Jan Olejniczak was named a roundabout in 2008 at the junction of ul. Eugeniusz Kwiatkowskiego and Wincentego Witos in the Katowice district of Wincenty Witos. Bibliography
