Anti-seismic construction
Anti-seismic construction is based on such construction of buildings that they can survive the effects of earthquakes without excessive damage to the supporting structure. Such design involves the use of mass inertia effect. This effect can be traced on a simple linear model composed of a large mass attached to a soft spring, the other end of which is subjected to rapid vibrations. The mass "does not keep up with" these vibrations and only makes small movements around its equilibrium. These small movements in practice only cause damage to the vibrating structure but usually do not cause its disaster. Bibliography
