Andrzej Warchałowski
Andrzej Warchałowski (born September 17, 1927 in Krakow) is a Polish entomologist, a native of the Chrysomelidae family, a retired professor at the University of Wroclaw. The grandson of Kazimierz Warchalowski and Jerzy Warchalowski.
He spent much of his childhood and early youth in Warsaw. During World War II he took direct part in the fighting, first in the Zamość region as a partisan in the National Armed Forces, and later as a front soldier of the First Army of the Polish Army. After the war until 1947, he continued his interrogated high school, later studied chemistry at the Jagiellonian University and chemistry and biology at the University and Technical University in Wroclaw (1948-1952). He graduated with a degree in chemistry (1950) and a master's degree in philosophy (1952). From an early age, he was fascinated by beetles, which throughout his professional life were the main subject of his research and scientific specialization - the area covered by his research was the area of Eurasia and North Africa. A considerable part of the materials he has worked on during his eight-month stay in Vietnam (1961/62), Morocco (1962, 1964), Greece (1964), Iran (1962/63, 1965/66, 1967/68, 1970/71) and during his two-year stay in Algeria (1985-1987), as well as during 35 weeks of research trips to the wider Mediterranean region.
Both at home and abroad, as well as in national and foreign academic societies. He had a number of important functions: he was the director of the Department of Animal Systematics and Zoogeography, the director of the Zoological Institute (two terms), the president of the Polish Entomological Society (two terms) and a member of the Zoological Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He was a member of the International Organizing Committee (SEEC, AEC), and was also editor-in-chief of several scientific publications. He created a taxonomy school in Wroclaw, one of the five best in the world. He also raised his successors, some of whom have achieved considerable scientific successes.
