Sylwester (Russian: Симеон Агафонович Медведев; 27 January / 6 February 1641, in Kursku, - February 11 / February 1691 in Sergiev Posad) - writer, court poet, historiographer, philosopher, author of an unfinished project to establish a university in Moscow. Student and friend of Symeon Połocki.
In 1658 he moved to Moscow and started working in a secret tsarist office. From 1665, he studied at a school at the Zaikonospassky monastery in Moscow, where he attracted the attention of a monk from Połock.
In 1674 he became a monk in Putyw.
In 1677 he returned to Moscow, where he became the proofreader of religious books published in the Moscow Printing House.
He took part in religious disputes in the 1780s, on the side of "Latin" and in political fight after the death of Fiodor III, supporting the party of the regent Zofia. After an unsuccessful rebellion and the defeat of Zofia, Medvedev was executed on the orders of Piotr I. Bibliography Authoritative control (person):
