The school, one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Scotland, was founded on the initiative of Sir William Fettes in 1870 as a memorial to his late son.

Originally the school was exclusively male, since 1970 also girls. Over two thirds of the students live in dormitories on the campus. Contrary to most Scottish schools, Fettes applies the principles of the English education system.

The school is considered to be prestigious and is described by journalists as "Northern Eton".

Among its graduates are Tony Blair, politicians John Simon, Selwyn Lloyd and Iain Macleod, Nobel laureate Angus Deaton, pioneer of ultrasound Ian Donald, explorer and discoverer Hesketh Hesketh-Prichard, Catholic priest William Theodore Heard, composers Lorne Balfe and Michael Tippett , a historian of NGL Hammond, actress Tilda Swinton, entrepreneur David Ogilvy and athletes Augustus Grant-Asher, Bunny Wauchope.

In 1998, Fettes was ranked fourth in the school's Daily Telegraph newspaper. One year later she was ranked fifth in a similar Sunday Times poll, and in 2001 the same newspaper rated Fettes as the "Scottish school of the year".
