Jan Fojcik


Jan Fojcik (born 4 May 1888 in Obroki, a settlement in Załężu (now a district of Katowice, died December 23, 1975 in Chorzów) - social activist, columnist, editor of "Śpiewak Śląski".

He was born into a working-class family, graduated elementary school. He wanted to be a locksmith, but spent his whole life singing and social music in Silesia. He started at the chorus "Unity" in Bytom. For 45 years (with a break forced by the outbreak of World War II) he worked in the Silesian Songs Association, as a treasurer and then secretary. He co-organized the annual rallies of Polish choirs on Zadol (now Katowice Ligota).

In 1920 he co-founded the literary and musical monthly "Śpiewak Śląski", for four years (1922-26) he was its editor-in-chief, and throughout the existence of someone like the administrative director. He published reviews and articles on musicology, as well as publications on the history of Polish singing in Silesia. Author of several hundred publications, including in particular the collection of monographic sources "Materials from the history of social movement singing in Silesia" (1961)

He established the Archive of Singing in Upper Silesia and the Nut Gallery in Katowice. From 1929 he was the technical secretary of the Silesian Music Library. He worked for the unification of the Polish singing associations and became a member of the Council of Supreme Union of Polish Singing and Music Ensembles in Warsaw.

He died on December 23, 1975 in Chorzów, in accordance with the wishes of the Polish Association of Choirs and Orchestras, he was buried in Katowice, in the cemetery at ul. French. Honors Publications
