Eiki Matayoshi


Eiki Matayoshi (Japanese 又 吉 栄 喜, born July 15, 1947 in Urasoe) is a Japanese writer.

He studied at the Faculty of Law and Literature at the University of the Ryukyus in Naha. Between 1971 and 1999 he worked in the Urasoe city administration. The theme of his early works (in the 70s and 80s) was related to the socio-political situation in Okinawa. These works were initially locally popular, the novel by Jōji ga shasatsu shita inoshishi (George shot the wild boar) in 1977 received the Kyushu Literary Award, and Gin'yashik (Villa) Subaru Award in 1980.

After a six-year hiatus, he returned in 1995 to the novel Buta no mukui (The Curse of the Swine), which brought him wider acclaim and received the " Akutagawa. It started a new period in the work of Matayoshi, whose weight has shifted to the functioning of ancient customs and rituals in the lives of modern Okinawa. In 1999, Matayoshi resigned from the office to devote himself to writing.
