Tus (per طوس, st.gr. Σούσια, Sousia) - an ancient city in north-eastern Iran in the last Chorasan-e Razawi, located near Mashad. Probable burial place of Al-Ghazali. Tus, Iran.
In 330 BC was acquired by Alexander of Macedon. Since the Islamic conquest, the city has been an important administrative and cultural center. In later years, its importance diminished. After the Umayyad Caliph's capture of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, he remained part of the caliphate until 747, and then under Abu Muslim al-Khurasani. In 809, during an expedition to suppress the rebellion in the area of Chorasan, the Abbasid caliph Harun ar-Rashid became ill and died in the city. During the Mongol conquests, completely destroyed.
