Society of Harmony in Poznań

Harmony Society - an artistic association founded in Poznań by Maksymilian Braun in 1848. It operated until 1852.

The Society aimed to promote Polishness, mainly through the propagation of Polish musical culture (initially exclusively of the Church). The organization had three faculties: dramatic, plastic and musical, as well as an amateur choir conducted by Teofil Klonowski. Singing in Polish was tolerated by some of the more open German music organizations in Poznan in those years, but the aim of Harmony was a broader approach - singing Polish songs, rescuing indigenous culture and promoting the achievements of Polish artists. After the liquidation of the Society, the Society of Czeladź Catholic (the 1860, headed by Teofil Klonowski) continued its objectives.

Between 1869 (from December) -1872 the Central Harmony Society was established in Poznań, founded on the initiative of Bolesław Dembiński and his brother Matthias. It covered (through subsidiaries) the whole area of Wielkopolska. In 1872 there were 665 members (40 subsidiaries). On July 17, 1871, the first general assembly of Polish singers took place in Poznań. Apart from cultural purposes, the Society had political objectives, which kept the organization from being watched by the German authorities (eg Bolesław Dembiński was sentenced to 10 thalers of fine or prison for failing to do certain formal affairs).
