Act on Canadian Lands
Dominion Lands Act - Act passed by the Canadian Parliament in 1872 to encourage emigration and settlement in the agricultural areas of the Canadian Western Territory. The law envisaged allocating terrestrial, agricultural land of 65 hectares to families and individuals who were at least 21 years old (later reduced to 19 years). The only requirement was a stamp duty of $ 10. The plot was acquired by the owner after three years, provided that he developed at least 12 acres of farmland and built a permanent home. Otherwise, he lost the right to property and was obliged to return the plot. This very liberal law has contributed to the rapid settlement of the southern territories of the Northwest Territories.
