Pastoral Song (Aubrey de Vere's poem)
Pastoral Song - a verse by Irish poet and playwright Aubrey de Vere (1788-1846), father of Aubrey Thomas de Vere, published in 1823 in the volume of The Duke of Mercia: an Historical Drama. The Lamentation of Ireland, and Other Poems. The work consists of a four-sided rhymed stanza according to the abab pattern. It has thirteen stanzas. Alongside the rhyme, the poet uses alliteration: Her cheeks of blushing beauty, Her modest eyes downcast, I thought it was a duty To worship as she past. Hers were the snowy fingers That loved the strings of song, What time the west wind lingers Poetic steeps among. Her innocent voice! how sweetly Arose its simple sound, While virgins, fair and featly, Went dancing in a round. Bibliography
