Nuno de Cunha da Ataíde


Nuno de Cunha da Ataíde (born December 8, 1664 - December 15, 1750) is a Portuguese cardinal.

He was born in Lisbon, in the family of Povolide seniors. He studied law at the University of Coimbra, obtaining a bachelor's degree. He was ordained a priest and became a canon of the diocesan chapter in Coimbra and Lisbon. He was a member of the advisors of King Peter II (1667-1706). He also served as the inquisitor of the Tribunal in Lisbon.

In 1704 he was recommended for the post of bishop Elvas, but refused to accept this promotion. On December 14, 1705, he was appointed Titular Bishop of Targa and was ordained a bishop on 14 March 1706. He retained his post at the royal court after the death of Peter II, as the new king, John V (1706-1750), also qualified him as a close adviser. On July 30, 1707, he was nominated by the General Inquisitor of Portugal and the head of the Portuguese Inquisition until his death.

On 18 May 1712, Pope Clement XI appointed him Cardinal. After his death (March 19, 1721) Nuno de Cunha da Ataíde went to Rome, but arrived at the conclave of 1721. The new Pope Innocent XIII accepted him and, on June 16, 1721, he conferred on him the titular church of S.
