Jan Leonardi


Jan Leonardi (born 1541 in Diecimo, Lucca in Italy, died October 9, 1609 in Rome) is an Italian apothecary, priest, founder of the Order of the Regulars of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Curriculum vitae <<> Jan Leonardi was born in 1541 in a family of humble landlords. He was sent to Lucca to learn the art of pharmacy. There he attended a group called "Colombini", which obliged real Christians to support the poor and the pilgrims.

At the age of 26, at the advice of his spiritual director, he left the profession of an apothecary and began his church studies, and in 1571 he celebrated his first Mass. Since then he has devoted himself to preaching confession, especially teaching the doctrine of Christianity, according to the norms of the Council of Trent. He founded the Society of Christian Science, and was also the founder of the Order of the Regular Clerics of the Mother of God. During the first general chapter he was elected Superior General and went to Rome to obtain approval of the statute approved by the bishop in 1584. He died on October 9, 1609 and was buried in the church of S. Maria in Portico, and later his body was transferred to the church of S. Maria in Campitelli.

Beatified by Pius IX in 1861 and canonized by Pius XI on April 17, 1938.
