Gajusz Popiliusz Laenas

Gaius Popilius Laenas (Latin Caius Popilius Laenas) is a Roman politician from the Plebeian family Popiel (gens popilia), senator and consul twice. His activity was in the 1st half. 2nd century BC

Consul of the years 172 and 158 p.n.e., praised by the legation (message) to Antiochus Epifanes of 168 BC. (described by Liwius and Polibius Ab Urbe Condita XLV.12, Acts XXIX.27).

169 p. Antioch ruler of Syria won a significant victory over Ptolemy Egypt, resulting in certain territorial assignments. The Roman Senate did not accept the changes, and in the letter Laenas provided, senators demanded Seleucid's resignation from his Cypriot and Egyptian conquests. When at a meeting in the outskirts of Alexandria, the king wanted to say hello to the delegates, Laenas unceremoniously handed him a scroll, and after he blazed a circle around his person, he said that the ruler must not go beyond the circle unless he gives a clear answer. Depressed Antioch agreed to the terms of the Senate.

This was one of the most obvious signs of a change in the style of Roman politics advocated by Katon. He assumed brutal annexations and humiliated opponents and was at the same time opposed to conception and divide (Latin divide et impera) African Scouts.
