Walentin Prokopow

Walentin Ivanovich Prokopov (Russian: Валентин Иванович Прокопов; born June 10, 1929) is a Soviet water sports player, Olympic medalist.

He participated in two Olympic Games (IO 52, IO 56). In 1952 he took seventh place with the team (he scored at least two goals), four years later he was third in the league (without goal). Bronze medalist of the 1958 European Championship.

This player is best known for the Hungarian semi-final match played at the Melbourne Games. The match was politically motivated (a few weeks before the Soviet troops entered Hungary due to the Hungarian students' protests in Budapest), and from the very start there was a severe clash. Hungary were clearly 4-0, with two goals scored by Ervin Zádor. A few minutes before the end of the meeting, one of the Hungarian players asked Zádora to provoke the Soviet waterpolist. Prokopov turned out to be a player who, after exchanging sentences with Hungary, struck him in the face, cutting his brow. The water was colored red, which resulted in a violent reaction from the public and the Hungarian activists who wanted to bring justice to Soviet riders. Bibliography
