Burłacy on the Volga
Burłacy on the Volga (original Bulgarian на Волге, Burłaki on Wołgie) - a picture of the Russian painter Ilja Riepina from 1872-1873. Description
The picture shows Russian river transport workers - burłaków.
The picture is typically realistic: it presents the hard life of a man condemned to hard work. The painting shows twelve burglaries of various ages (burłacy came from the rural proletariat, tramps and - Polish exiles). They haul a ship with down sails along the sandy bank of the Volga. Burglars girded with tow belts are resigned and tired.
In the background you can see a steamer - a symbol of modernity and forward pressure.
