Patrick Cooney

He served in the army for five years. He graduated law at University College Dublin, after which he practiced as a lawyer. He became involved in political activities under Fine Gael, he was a member of the national authorities of this group.
In the 1960s he unsuccessfully ran for Dáil Éireann. He obtained his parliamentary mandate in the supplementary elections in 1970. He maintained it in 1973, but lost it in 1977. He was then appointed to the Seanad Éireann. In 1981 he returned to the lower house of the Irish parliament, successfully applying for re-election in the elections in February 1982, November 1982 and in 1987.
From March 1973 to July 1977 he was the minister of justice. From June 1981 to March 1981 he was the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Posts and Telegraphs. In December 1982, he took up the post of Defense Minister, which he held until February 1986. Then, until March 1987, he served as the Minister of Education.
In the years 1989-1994 he sat in the European Parliament of the third term, he was a member of the Christian Democratic faction.
