Nikefor (caar)
Nicefor (Greek: Νικηφόρος) - son of Emperor Constantine V and his third wife Eudokia Melisseny, cezar. Curriculum vitae
Nikifor was born in the late 756/758 as the third emperor Constantine V. In 769 he was appointed Caesar with his elder brother Krzysztof. After his father's death in 775, his half-brother Leon IV Khazar (775-780) joined his throne. There was a conflict between the brothers. Leon IV Khazar ordered to confiscate a large amount of gold belonging to the children of Edudoka Melisseny and distributed them to the army and residents of Constantinople. In the spring of 776, a conspiracy with Nicefore included a number of courtiers. Nicefor was consequently deprived of the title of Caesar, while those involved in the conspiracy sent to Chersonesos in the Crimea. After the death of Leon IV, the authorities were taken over by Empress Irena, ruling on behalf of her son, Constantine VI. Nicefor and his brothers were again involved in a plot against power. After 792, there are no to him in the sources. His brothers are mentioned back in 812, when they tried to announce one of them to the Emperor by revolted soldiers. Emperor Michał I Rangabe then sent them to the Princes' Islands. Bibliography
