In the initial period of his work, he was associated with the magazine "Poleznoje uwiesielenije" by Chieraskowa, who patronized him as a young poet. In 1783 he wrote his main work - the heroicomic poem Duszeńka being a travesty of the ancient myth, based on the novel de La Fontaine Les amours de Psyché et de Cupidon; this poem was a written language of refinement and at the same time light and graceful. He is also the author of stage songs - including laughter comedy Radość Duszeńki (1786) and the play Slavs (1788). In 1785 he published a collection of Russkije's folk proverbs; he also translated the works of Voltaire, Diderot and Rousseau and edited the journal Niewinnamoje rozrażnienije (1763) and the newspaper "Santk-Pietierburgskije wiedomosti" (1775-1782).
