Henry Ireton


Henry Ireton (born 1611 in Attenborough, died November 28, 1651 in Limerick) - English soldier and politician, one of the commanders of the army of parliament in the English Civil War. Curriculum vitae

After the outbreak of the civil war, he joined the army of parliament. In November 1642, he commanded the cavalry at Edgehill in Worcestershire, during the following year he met and befriended Oliver Cromwell, whom he later became close associates in the party of the Independents and in the army. In 1644 he was appointed deputy governor of Isle of Ely by Cromwell, he took part in the battles at Marston Moor in July 1644 and at Naseby in June 1645 ended with the victories of the parliamentary troops. In 1645 he was elected to the parliament. In the summer of 1646 he married Cromwell's oldest daughter, Bridget. In 1648 he contributed to the initiation of the trial of King Charles I and the release and execution of the death sentence on him (in January 1649). In 1649 he became the deputy of Cromwell suppressing the uprising in Ireland, and in 1650 he took command of pacification forces. In 1651 he won Limerick, shortly thereafter he died. Bibliography
