Die Boten des Todes - a Grimm brothers story published in 1840 in the fourth edition of their collection of fairy tales (volume 2, no. 177). Contents

A giant met on his way Death. He fought hard with her as a result of which Death was defeated and barely survived by the road.

Some time later, a man walked along the same path. In the pursuit of mercy, he came to die with help, providing her with her. When Death came to her, she revealed his identity. She stated that in return for his help, when his time would come to die, he would warn him of his arrival by sending messengers earlier.

A few years later, this man was seriously ill. The illness seemed deadly, but the man was optimistic, for none of the envoys that had been mentioned had died. He was so surprised when he saw Death in his doorstep after recovering. He told her that she was breaking the word because she had promised him that he would be alerted to his arrival by the envoys. Then Death said that his illness and symptoms were her messengers. Then the man died. Bibliography
