St. Peter (painting El Greco of 1613)

Saint Peter - picture of a Spanish painter of Greek origin Dominikos Theotokopulos, known as El Greco.

The painting was created for the church of San Vicente in Toledo. It is one of the largest paintings depicting the full-figured portrait of the apostle by El Greco. The figure of Peter was painted on top of a mountain against the background of a raging sky. The lower perspective gives characters even more monumental features. The apostle has bare feet, his coat fluttering in the wind, and in his left hand he holds in barely noticeable grasp the heavy keys to the kingdom of heaven. El Greco in a masterful way, characteristic of himself, shows the extraordinary power of nature forces and power of faith of the first Father of the Church. Both forces fill up.

The painting was purchased after the advice of Dieg Velazquez by Philip IV to the Escorial. A few years later, another work is purchased for the palace - Saint Ildefons to the retabulum as a pendant to St. Peter. Bibliography
