Jerzy Szczerbań


Jerzy Szczerbań (born 19 November 1930 in Kleszczele) is a Polish surgeon specializing in vascular and general surgery and hepatology, professor of medical science, rector of the Medical Academy in Warsaw (1979-1981). Curriculum vitae

Since 1948 he belonged to the PZPR. In 1954 he graduated from the Medical Academy in Warsaw. In 1966, on the basis of a dissertation entitled "Experimental study of venous suture," he received his doctorate in medical sciences, habilitated in 1973 on the basis of the dissertation of portal hypertension. In 1979 he was awarded the title of Professor of Medical Sciences. Since 1953 he has been professionally associated with the Medical Academy in Warsaw, later transformed into Warsaw Medical University. He started in the 1st Surgical Department, in 1988 he assumed the position of full professor. He was also employed at the Department of Experimental Surgery of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He held internships and scholarships, among others. at the Karolinska Institute and at the University of Rome - La Sapienza.

Specializations gained professionally in the field of general surgery - 1st degree in 1957 and 2nd degree in 1962. In 1978 he initiated the creation of the first in Poland and until 1989 he managed the Clinic of General Surgery and Liver Diseases. In 2002 he organized and then headed the Department of Public Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences. From 1979 to 1981 he was rector of the Medical University of Warsaw. He was the chairman of the Scientific and Program Board of PWZL (1984-1989) and chairman of the Scientific Council of the Minister of Health (2001-2005). He obtained honorary membership in the Society of Polish Surgeons and headed the Warsaw branch of the TCHP.

The Medal of the Order of Polonia Restituta, Knight's Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Poland, the Gold and Silver Cross of Merit, the Medal of the 30th Anniversary of the People's Republic of Poland, the Medal of Merit for the Defense of the Country, the 1000th Anniversary of the Polish State and others.
