Eastern Bank (Poznań)

Headquarters of the Eastern Bank in Poznań

Eastern Bank (German: Ostbank für Handel und Gewerbe) is a bank (joint stock company) operating in Poznań in the years 1898-1918. A separate article: East Bank Building in Poznan.

The bank was the most powerful banking institution in the city, with more capital than all Polish banks combined (without cooperative banking). The business began with a capital of 8 million marks, to reach the sum of 18 million marks in the early 20th century. Ostbank owed its support to the Berlin politicians, as well as the support of local banks, who were forced to buy out shares of the bank in Poznan. In 1908, as many as 75% of Ostbank's shares belonged to four banks in Berlin. By 1914 almost 40 branches were opened in the area of Wielkopolska and Pomerania. The Company set itself as the main objective of supporting trade and industry and conducting commercial operations, including real estate. However, it did not have any banking activities.
