Dominik Ridolfino
Dominik Ridolfino (born 1533, died 1584) - Italian engineer, artillery colonel, serving in the forces of the First Polish Republic during the reign of King Stefan Batory.
He came to Poland in 1580 as an experienced specialist at the invitation of the king, who intended to adapt the outdated artillery to the level of this formation in Western European countries. He took part in battles in the north-eastern extremities of the country. During the battles with the Russian tsar, he used incendiary bullets at the Siege siege, very effective against wooden buildings. He gained fame during the siege of the fortress in Wielki Łuky. The explosion of gunpowder magazines, which was the result of a fire set by the fire of Polish cannon, helped the Polish troops capture this strong point of resistance. He was, on the orders of the king, inspector of fortresses in his native Transylvanian duchy, as well as the newly appointed administrator of fortresses in Livonia seized by the Polish forces. he spent the last years of his life in the castle of Waradyn in Transylvania as the main fortress engineer.
According to R. H. Bochenka, Ridolfino contributed very much to the development of military engineering and artillery in 16th century Poland.
