Andres Larka
Andres Lark (born March 5, 1879 in Pilistvere, Estonia, January 8, 1943 in the Kirov Oblast, in the USSR) - Estonian politician, military commander during the Estonia independence war. Life and activities
In 1902, he graduated from the Military Academy in Vilnius. He was a member of the Russian-Japanese War and then participated in the First World War fighting on the Eastern Front against the German Reich, including in East Prussia, Poland and Romania.
Then, the first Minister of War of the Republic of Estonia, at the same time was appointed to the rank of general of the division. He was a co-organizer and one of the commanders of the independence fighting while serving as chief of staff. In the years 1919-1925, he was an adviser to the Minister of War. In 1925, he retired for health reasons.
In 1934, as the leader of the Eesti Vabadussõjalaste Liit ("wabs"), he was their candidate for the presidency of Estonia and was recognized as the favorite to this office. On 12 March 1934, Prime Minister Konstantin Päts and General Johan Laidoner, over a month before the election, made a military coup and prevented Lark's choice and introduced a state of emergency in the country. As a result of these actions Lark was twice imprisoned between 1934-1935 and 1935/37. After the occupation of Estonia by the Soviet Union in 1940, he was arrested by the Soviets and died in prison in the Kyrgyz region in 1943. Bibliography
