David Gitari was born on September 16, 1937. In 1972 he was ordained a priest, and on 20 July 1975 he was consecrated to the bishop of the diocese of Mount Kenya. On January 12, 1997, he was elected Archbishop of the Anglican Church in Kenya. On July 14, 1998, he received an honorary doctorate. On September 16, 2002 he retired.
