Cláudio Kestener was born on December 20, 1961 in São Paulo, Brazil. He is the son of Rolf Kestener, who represented his country during the 14th London Summer Olympics in the United Kingdom. His sports career as a swimmer began at the age of 19 in 1980 during the 22nd Moscow Summer Olympics in the USSR, finishing eighth in a 4x100 meter relay race and thus beating the record for South America. In addition to the eighth place, he also took part in disciplines 100 meters and 200 meters in butterfly style, but did not get to the finals.
In 1981, Kestener was a Brazilian record holder with a 100-meter butterfly style with a time of 57.12 seconds.
