He studied at the gymnasium in Smolensk, in 1914 he published his first work in the "Now" newspaper - "Ask sołdata", after graduation he worked as a teacher at a rural school and secretary of the rural executive committee, from 1918 he belonged to RKP (b ). In the years 1919-1921 he edited a poviat newspaper in Jelnia, later he worked in a regional newspaper in Smolensk, in 1930 he published a collection of poems "Prowincyja", and in 1931 "Mastiera Ziemli". In 1931 he moved to Moscow and worked there as an editor of the Kolchoźnik magazine. He wrote lyrics for the popular songs of "Katyusha" and "Lonely harmony". In 1949 he published a collection of songs and poems "Stichi i piesni", and in 1965 a collection of poetry "Stichotworienija". He was buried at the Nowodziewicz Cemetery. In 1988 he was posthumously awarded the honorary citizenship of Smolensk. His name was given to the streets in Moscow, Smolensk and Krzywy Rog. In 2000, his monument was erected in Smolensk.
