Lorenz Christoph von Somnitz
Lorenz Christoph von Somnitz, Wawrzyniec Krzysztof von Somnitz, born 1612, d. 1678 - Chancellor of the Pomeranian Province in the years 1655-1678.
He was the son of a municipal judge and counselor at the court of the Jadwiga of Brunswick, residing in Szczecin. Thanks to his father's support, he learned first in schools in Kolobrzeg and Torun, then at the universities of Königsberg and Wittenberg. He traveled the countries of western Europe - he was in England, France, the Netherlands and Denmark. Before 1642 he briefly stayed at the court of Duchess Jadwiga. From 1642 to (probably) 1652 he served as counselor at the court of Princess Anne and Prince Ernest Boguslav von Croy. In 1652, thanks to the intercession of Friedrich Runge (then the Chancellor of the Pomeranian Board), he was appointed by the elector of Brandenburg Friedrich Wilhelm as a councilor and was appointed member of the Board of Pomerania. In the following year (1653) Fryderyk Wilhelm promoted him to the rank of secret counsel. After Runge's death in 1655, the elector appointed him Chancellor of Pomerania, and two years later (1657) became Lębork-Byt-starost. Since then (1656) he was one of Frederick Wilhelm's closest associates, especially in the area of contacts with Poland, which he considered an enemy of the Brandenburg-Prussian state. He fervently supported Calvinism in the area of the state. In the 50s and 60s, the main political opponent of Prince Ernest Bogusława in Pomerania. Bibliography
