While attending Indiana University, Wiethoff began dating a woman who later moved to Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, Wiethoff was persuaded by many to become an actor. But these promises were never true. Wiethoff has never received so many roles in acting and worked as a bartender.

In December 2008, Wiethoff returned home when he received a call from his agent, saying he was interviewed for an unnamed computer game. He finished the interview, feeling discouraged that he did not get a role. A few days later, however, he learned that he was given a role. The game was called Red Dead Redemption and was produced by Rockstar Games. Wiethoff lent his voice to the main character of the game, John Marston, and also made a motion capture for this character. He later added Marston in addition to Red Dead Redemption.

Although he enjoyed working on Red Dead Redemption, Wiethoff decided not to continue his acting career, not counting a few roles. He said he wanted to focus more on raising his children and supporting his family.
