Cyril Toumanoff


Cyril Leo Heraclius, Prince Toumanoff (ros.Кирилл Львович Туманов, born 13 October 1913, died February 4, 1997) is a Russian-American historian, medievalist, armenist, Byzantine, iranist. An explorer of the history and culture of Georgia and Armenia. Curriculum vitae

He came from a Russian family with Georgian roots. The family went to the United States during the revolution in Russia. There, Cyril undertook studies in history (his masters were Robert Pierpont Blake and Nicholas Adontz). He was a professor at Georgetown University in 1943, then a professor at the University. He was converted from Orthodoxy to Roman Catholicism (became a Maltese bachelor). He died in Rome in 83 at the age of 83, was buried in the Knights of Malta's Chapel of the Campo Verano in Rome. He became a recognized authority on the genealogy of Caucasian countries. His work greatly influenced the western perception of the Middle Ages of the Caucasus.
