Henrik Arnold Wergeland Henrik Arnold Vergeland (born June 17, 1808 in Kristiansand, died July 12, 1845 in Christianity) is a Norwegian poet, playwright and prose writer.

Considered one of the most eminent artists of the Romantic period. He was an advocate of freedom and democracy. Thanks to him, the day in which the constitution of independent Norway (17 May) was adopted was declared a national holiday. As a republican, he opposed the union of Norway with Sweden. In his writings, he appealed to support the national liberation struggles of the Greeks, Belgians and Irish. Many articles devoted to fighting the Poles with the tsar. He considered his work as a mission that aims to work for the good of the people and to fight for universal progress.

He published, among others, the epic Skabelsen, Mennesket og Messias (1829, Creation, Man and Messiah).
