David (King of Makuria)
Dawid (Arab Dawood) - the king of Makuria in Nubia in the years around 1268-1276.
He was the nephew of the blind king in Dongola Abu al-Izz Murtaszkara. He deprived him of the throne and imprisoned him. Murtaszkara's sons were expelled. They asked for the help of the Baybard of Egypt, Baybars. In 1272, the Nubian army of David attacked Ajzab. In retaliation, Egypt's governor Kus in September 1272 invaded the Nubian borderland located 20 days from Dongola (north of Assuan). David's nephew was his nephew Shakanda asked Egypt for help. Baybars sent a Mamluk expedition to support the claims of the pretender. On March 31, 1276, there was a clash at Dongola, where the Nubian army was defeated. David crossed the Nile and fled south to Al-Abwabu, abandoning his mother, sister and niece. The Mamluks set Shakanda on the throne. David was soon released to the Sultan as a prisoner. The Egyptian intervention aimed at changing the status of the kingdom of Makuria. Since then, the era of trying to control Nubia by Egypt with the use of puppet rulers began. Bibliography
