Clara Petrella was born in 1914 in Milan. She came from a family of great musical traditions (her ancestor was an Italian opera composer, Enrico Petrella, and her aunt, Olivia Petrella, was a well known opera singer). She studied singing with her sister, Micaela at Ersilde Cervi-Caroli and Giannina Russ. She made her debut as Liu in Giacoma Puccini's Turandot in 1939 in Alexandria. Due to its dramatic temperament, combined with the beautiful voice of Spinto, it was compared to the famous Italian dramatic actress, Eleonora Duse and called "Duse of Singing." He has been involved with La Scala since 1947 (his debut as Giorgetta in Puccini's Pulloys) until 1962, and created many vernacular and contemporary roles. She was the first Serafin performer in Cagliostro and Mili in Figlia di Jorio Ildebrando Pizzetti, the first Italian Magda in Consul Giancarlo Menotti She also created Nedda in Pajares, the title Manon Lescaut in Puccini's work, Adrian Lecouvreur Francesco Cilei, Iris Pietro Mascagni, Desdemona in Otello Giuseppe Verdi, Charlotta in Werther Jules Massenet.

In the 1950s, she made several recordings for the Italian company Cetra (Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut, L'amore dei tre re, Cloak, Zaza) and also for Decca Pajace. She also starred in the television productions of the RAI television series (Manon Lescaut and The Mantle, 1956). Bibliography
