Tadeusz Szafran


Tadeusz Szafran (born February 25, 1914 in Nowy Sącz, died August 21, 1941 in Biegonow near Nowy Sacz) - Polish teacher, Polish Army officer, participant in the anti-Nazi conspiracy.

He was the son of Joseph and Helena of the Kings; had three younger sisters. He graduated from high school in Nowy Sącz, and in 1932, Jan Dlugosz. He was involved in scouts. At the School of Physical Education in Cracow he obtained a master's degree, and he also received training at the Cieszyn cadet school. From 1938 he worked as a teacher in Bilgoraj.

Mobilized as a lieutenant of the Polish Army, he fought in the September campaign. Later, he returned to Nowy Sacz, where he was a teacher at the junior high school. He joined the conspiracy (Union of Armed Struggle). He participated in a brave action to release Jan Karski's emissary from the hospital in Nowy Sącz on 28 July 1940.

In the spring of 1941, there was a conspiracy in the Nowy Sącz Arms Association and Tadeusz Szafran was among the arrested. On August 21, 1941, he was assassinated in Biegon near Nowy Sącz in a group of thirty Polish guerrillas. After the exhumation of the victims, on March 21, 1945, he was buried in a common grave-mausoleum at the Old Cemetery in Nowy Sacz on the Avenue of Liberty.
