David Allan


David Allan (born February 13, 1744, died on August 6, 1796) - a Scottish painter who creates historical paintings and genre scenes. Curriculum vitae

He came from Alloa in central Scotland. He studied painting in Glasgow in 1755-1762. In 1764 he left for Rome, where he lived until 1777. In 1771, he sent two of his paintings, Pompey the Great after his defeat and Cleopatra, crying over the ashes of Mark Antony to the exhibition at the Royal Academy in London. In 1773, another image of Hektor, saying goodbye to Andromache, won the gold medal at the Accademia di S Luca. After returning to London in 1777, he worked as a portrait painter. In 1780 he settled in Edinburgh, where he became the director of the Academy of Arts. During this period, he created his most famous works such as "Scottish wedding", "Dances at the top". He also created illustrations for "Osjan" by James Macpherson and "Gentle Shepherd" by Allan Ramsay. Bibliography
