Max Stiepl
Maximillian "Max" Stiepl (born March 23, 1914 - August 27, 1992) is an Austrian speed skater, Olympic bronze medalist. Career
Max Stiepl's career success came in 1936 when he won the bronze medal at a distance of 10,000 m at the Olympic Games in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Only Norwegians Ivar Ballangrud and Fin Birger Wasenius were ahead of him. In the same games he was also fifth in the 1500 and 5000 meters. Two years earlier he was fourth in the multi-field world championships in Helsinki, losing the fight for the Ballangrud medal. Fourth place also took place at the European Championships in Helsinki in 1935 and the European Championships in Oslo a year later. After the Austrian Anschluss in 1938 he took part in the Third Reich Championship, winning silver medals three times. At the end of World War II he returned to the sport, but he achieved weaker results. In 1948 he participated in the Sankt Moritz Games, where his best result was the tenth place at a distance of 10 000 m. He won ten gold medals at the Austrian championship in a multitude: 1934-1938, 1943 and 1947-1950. Bibliography
