Roman Wladyslaw Sanguszko


Roman Władysław Stanisław Andrzej Sanguszko (1901-1984) - a prince, landowner, Arabian horse breeder, philanthropist.

He was the only son of Eustachy Stanislaw (1842-1903) and Konstancja Anna of the Zamoyski (1864-1941). He took a careful home education. His uncle godfather was Roman uncle. He spent the first World War with his mother in France in Aquitaine, on the border with Spain. Inherited from his father and uncle, he placed him in the rank of the richest people of the Second Polish Republic.

He owned the Gumnisk, the Podhorcy, who wanted to restore the old splendor and the tenement house in Krakow on Franciszkańska Street. He was managed by numerous managers and plenipotentiaries. He devoted himself to breeding Arabian horses, employed the best then a specialist from the breeding of Bogdan Ziętarski. Prince was also an avid auto mechanic. In 1926 he joined the board of the Kraków Automobile Club.

In 1933 he made a romantic affair with Wanda of Turzynski Krynicka, who divorced for the duke with his husband, engineer Tadeusz Krynicki. When Wanda became pregnant, Roman married her. The wedding took place on June 14, 1937 in Saint Cloud, in the suburbs of Paris. On October 2, 1937, son of Piotr Antoni Samuel Sanguszko was born in London. The Prince's mother did not accept that relationship, so the couple lived abroad. His wife died on December 17, 1937, the prince became the guardian of Barbara's stepdaughter.

At the outbreak of World War II, the prince decided to leave Gumnisk to the Podhorc. He left them on September 17, 1939, with the arrival of the Red Army in Poland, going to the Hungarian border. Traveling after occupied Europe ended in Lisbon, June 10, 1940 he sailed to Brazil. On the ship he met his second wife, wealthy widow Germaine Lucie Burchard (1896-1966). He was president of the "Club 44", founded in 1955, which brought together prosperous postwar emigration. In 1977 he built and furnished the House of Quiet Old Age in São Paulo for Poles and Poles in Brazil, and the house is also a place for cultural meetings.

Prince died of diabetes mellitus, respiratory failure and acute lung infection. He was buried at the da Paz cemetery in São Paulo.
