Traugott Gerber

Traugott Gerber (born 16 January 1710 in Zodel (district of Neißeaue)) was a German botanist and physician. He was the son of pastor Johann Georg Gerber and Sidonia Gerber (from the house of Pfeiffer). Since 1730 he studied at Leipzig University (Leipzig Univerity) at the Faculty of Medicine, where he obtained his doctorate in 1735. In the years 1735-1742 he worked in Russia as a doctor and director of the botanical garden in Moscow. In the years 1739-1741 he was a participant in an expedition to the Volga and Don region to seek medicinal plants and herbs. Handwritten documents on this expedition lie in the Russian archives.

The gerbera flower name is derived from the name of the Gerbera Traugotta (it is an eponym from 1735, coined by Jan Frederik Gronovius).
