Fourth generation warfare (4GW) - a conflict characterized by the blurring of boundaries between regular warfare, politics, military and civilian action, and information warfare. The term appeared in the late 1980s, used by US military analysts (William S. Lind) as a script for the future war. It has become popular because of the Iraq war and terrorist attacks in the world. After the September 11, 2001 attacks (9/11), proponents of the theory claimed that the future was foretold.

There is also a definition that it is any war in which one of the main actors in the conflict is not the state and a strong group of non-state actors.

Example: Spartacus formation.

Characteristics of the Fourth Generation War: The concept was first described in 1989 at the Marine Corps Gazette, in an article titled "The Changing Face of War: Into the Fourth Generation."
