Dorit Schmiel in the memory of victims of the Berlin Wall
Dorit Schmiel (born April 25, 1941 in Berlin, died 19 February 1962) is a fatal victim of the Berlin Wall, shot dead by German border troops in an attempt to flee to West Berlin. Curriculum vitae Dorit Schmiel was born and raised in Berlin. After the death of his father in the Second World War, his mother returned to live with two children in East Berlin. There, after graduation, Schmiel learned in a state sewing business. Dissatisfied with the political situation and the permanent division of Berlin, together with four friends, she decided in early 1962 to escape. By choosing a convenient place to cross the border, the group decided to take one of the northern outskirts of the city, where Schmiel had successfully escaped. The border was secured only with barbed wire.
Around midnight on February 19, 1962, using the bad weather, the group went to the western district of Reinickendorf Rosenthal. Watching the guards, the refugees slid cautiously into the first line of fortifications next to the cemetery. After cutting the wires they found themselves in the so-called. the death belt, crawling from here in the snow towards the second line of lightning. There, they were discovered by soldiers who opened the fire. Schmiel in the belly and another of the refugees in the barge. After the surrender order, the group stopped continuing to escape. The wounded were escorted by soldiers to the nearest street, where half an hour later they were taken by ambulance to the police hospital (Krankenhaus der Volkspolizei) in the Mitte district. Upon arrival Dorit Schmiel died.
The other three escaped refugees stood before the Berlin-Pankow district court, receiving sentences ranging from 10 to 24 months in prison. After the unification of Germany, the prosecutor's office in Berlin launched proceedings against three shooters who were convicted in 1994 of 18 months of imprisonment for having committed a joint murder, which was a standard punishment in such cases.
Dorit Schmiel was commemorated with the other victims of the Berlin Wall in the so- a memory pavilion at the former border fortifications on Bernauer Straße. Literature
