From 1809 he served in the tsarist army, in 1811 he participated in the war with Turkey, in which he was wounded, in 1815 he became one of the collaborators and advisers of Tsar Alexander I, until 1824 he accompanied him on all his trips abroad, from 1816 as the director of the office of the chief of staff main. In 1827 he became the head of the main maritime staff, he participated in the war with Turkey (he took part in acquiring the strongholds Anapa and Varna, he was seriously wounded during the fighting), in 1828-1837 he was general-governor of Finland, in 1833 he received the rank of admiral. In 1853 he headed the tsarist mission to Istanbul, then in 1853-1855 he was the commander-in-chief of the Russian forces in the Crimean war, on September 20, 1854, he defeated Alma, October 25, 1854 at Bałakława, and November 5, 1854 at Inkerman, for February 15, 1855 he was dismissed.
