Lino Spiteri
Lino Spiteri (born September 21, 1938 in Qormi, November 14, 2014) is a Maltese politician, Labor Party activist, double finance minister, writer.
He studied at Oxford, earning degrees in social, political and economic sciences. He worked initially as a teacher, then a civil servant in the 1960s as a journalist. Between 1968 and 1970 he was employed in the Maltese Chamber of Commerce and then transferred to the Central Bank of Malta, where he was head of the board since 1974; He came to the position of deputy governor of the Bank and for some time served as governor. He represented Malta at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund.
In the political life of Malta, he became involved in 1957. Secretary General of the Labor Party youth, in 1959 became a member of the national board of the Party, and in 1962 was first elected to the parliament. He lost his mandate in 1966, was re-elected in 1981 and was a member of parliament until 1998. From 1981-1983 he served as finance minister in Dom Mintoff's cabinet, then to the Minister for Trade and Planning in Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici's government. Since 1987, after the takeover of power by the National Party, he was the chief expert of the opposition Labor Party for Financial and Economic Affairs. In 1992 he successfully ran for the leadership of the party. In 1996 he returned to finance minister Alfred Santa's office, but in March 1997 he resigned from government work after the conflict with the Prime Minister against the background of tax policy. He was in favor of Malta's integration with the European Union; he was a member of the Joint Committee of the European and Maltese Parliaments, and in 1997-1998 he chaired the committee. In 1998, he announced his retirement from political life.
He published as a journalist. He was the author of the correspondence for The Guardian and The Observer. He composed mainly short literary forms; has published several collections of short stories, poems and political essays as well as memoirs. He was a laureate of literary prizes. In 2008 he was awarded the National Order of Merit.
