William Musgrave
William Musgrave (born 1655, died 1721) - an English physician, physicist, historian and writer. He was the third son of Richard Musgrave of Nettlecombe in Somerset. He was born on November 4, 1655. He studied at Winchester College. From 1675, he studied at New College at the University of Oxford. In 1680 he briefly stayed at the University of Leiden, but soon returned to Oxford. In 1685 he received a medicine bakalureate, and in 1689 a doctorate in this field. In 1692 he was elected to the College of Physicians in London. From 1691 he lived and practiced in Exeter. His wife was Philippa, daughter of William Speke and Anne Roynon. He had a son, also William, and a daughter. He died in December 1721 and was buried on the 23rd of this month. He published, among others, medical treatises De Arthritide Symptomatica (1703) and De Arthritide Anomala (1707), in which he described rheumatoid arthritis.
