Filippo Grandi


Filippo Grandi (born 1957 in Milan) is an Italian diplomat, and since 2016 has been the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Curriculum vitae He graduated from the University of Milan with a degree in contemporary history, and also studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. A professional diplomat who has been associated with the UN Refugee Agency since the late 1980s. He worked as a UNHCR representative in Sudan, Syria, Turkey and Iraq. He led humanitarian operations, among others. in Kenya, Benin, Yemen and Afghanistan. In the years 1996-1997 he coordinated international humanitarian campaigns during the civil war in Congo. He then worked at the managerial positions of the UHNCR office in Geneva.

In 2004, he became deputy secretary general of the UN in Afghanistan (UNAMA peacekeeping mission) and 2005 UNRWA Deputy Commissioner General, UN Agencies for Assistance to Palestinian Refugees. In the years 2010-2014 he served as the Commissioner General. In 2015 appointed to the position of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (with a mandate from 1 January 2016).
