Bobsleigh
The first bobsleigh sleigh Bobslej before the start
Bobsled sleigh - a type of racing sledge in the Olympic bobsleigh competition. Bobslej is made of metal or plastic and equipped with steering devices and a brake, because these sleds are adapted to develop high speeds (in the order of 130 km / h and more) in driving on ice tracks.
The first bobsleigh were a simple, extended sledge with a metal-wooden structure (with 2 narrow metal skids) allowing to develop a higher speed compared to regular sleds.
Currently bobsleighs are developing significant speeds, so their design has changed. The skids were shortened by dividing them into 4 separate parts and narrowing them to form skates. To reduce the resistance of the bobsleigh air, it has a streamlined, built-in "shuttle" shape. At such speeds, the steering system alone is not enough - the whole team also directs the balance of the body. Bobsly two-seater weighs 165 kg (with a crew of 375 kg), four-seater - 230 kg (with a crew of 630 kg). The lack of weight of competitors, as in the case of kayak competition, is supplemented with ballast.
