Arrival of the nobility at the town hall of Poznań

Arrest of noblemen at the Poznan City Hall - the attack of the nobility of Wielkopolska to the Town Hall in Poznan, which took place on August 21, 1692.

The genesis of the events was the process of the nobleman of Wielkopolska, Wojciech Chwaliszewski of the Trąba coat of arms, a tax collector for the province of Inowrocław, coming from the village of Rękawczyn near Mogilno. This nobleman, after purchasing a batch of cloth in the shop of Piotr Cerbs (the then president of the city) at ul. Świętosławska, decided to return them as low quality goods. Cerbs did not accept the cloth because he thought it was already cut. There was a fight, and then they both went to the City Hall to try the case. Chwaliszewski was insulted at the Town Hall and decided to flee, but he was arrested, so he began calling for the help of the noble through the window. Near the Town Hall there were about 500 nobles with sabers. Urban forces represented the so-called. Demonstrators with escorts (daytime guards). The townspeople defended themselves with stones and roof tiles, temporarily stripping the nobility, but after some time returned in increased numbers. The noble forces could count as many as 5000 people - they occupied not only part of the Market, but also the neighboring streets, from the Jewish, to Świętosławska. Called to help from the castle, the soldiers under the command of General Rafal Leszczyński, turned back to not provoke attack on the castle. Eventually, the nobility and ordinary criminals broke into the Town Hall, where robberies and money (including orphans and memorabilia from the Swedish Deluge), the devastation of works of art, took place. royal paintings and statues, as well as massacres of city officials, burgesses, racers and guards in unknown numbers (some of them were thrown out of windows). The corpses and the dying ones were robbed of clothes, gold and money.

The break was interrupted by the Franciscans who came under the Town Hall in procession with the cross. This resulted in calming moods among the nobility, as well as the takeover of the initiative by the city. Some of the robbers of the nun dressed in habits and led them out of the battle arena. They also secured the Town Hall, closing it and protecting it from total ruin.

The result of the fighting was the closing of the trade in Poznań for several weeks, which resulted in starvation. The city gates were not closed for the night.
