Willem van Blijenburgh


Willem Peter Hubert van Blijenburgh (born 11 July 1881 in Zwolle, died 14 October 1936 in Bilthoven) is a Dutch officer, swordsman, Olympic triple medalist.

Like every Dutch swordsman at the time, van Blijenburgh was an officer in the Dutch army. He has never been very successful in fencing individual tournaments. He is the three-time bronze medalist in Olympic teams in Stockholm and Antwerp.

In addition, he also participated in the London and Paris Olympics and the Athens Summer Olympics. Using his position as a director at a military school in Der Helder, he had a great impact on Dutch sport, especially gymnastics. He wrote several books about gymnastics and physical education. He was the first Dutchman to hold a doctorate in physical education. Bibliography
