Valle Central - an area of approximately 900 km² in central Costa Rica between Cordillera Central and Cordillera de Talamanca, at an altitude of 1250 m. It is the most populous area of this country, inhabiting almost 2/3 of Costa Rica's population. In administrative terms it covers the four provinces of San José, Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago. Major cities of this region are the administrative centers of these provinces: San José (capital of the country), Alajuela, Cartago and Heredia. Valle Central is concentrated in the greater part of Costa Rica's economic activity.
The climate of this rather high-altitude region is less hot than it would have been due to its location at around 10 ° north latitude. Average annual temperature is about 22 ° C. Moderate temperatures have been a contributing factor to the development of settlement in this area. They also provide favorable conditions for growing coffee, especially as the fertile volcanic soils dominate here.
